The Spier Wine Estate, Hotel and Conference Centre will be home to the Talloires Network Leaders Conference: “Live Engagement, Transform Lives” from December 2 through December 4, 2014. Spier is located about 50 km from Cape Town, South Africa, and 30 km from the Cape Town International Airport.
Spier was one of the very first farms to be established in Stellenbosch in 1692. Its rich cultural heritage includes a restored Manor House, an impressive collection of Cape Dutch gables and the oldest dated wine cellar in the country. Although steeped in historical architecture and the tranquility of nature surrounded by the peaks of the Boland mountains, the state-of-the-art conference centre offers modern and vibrant facilities and technical support.
At Spier business, environment and society are connected by an approach called ‘the Spier Way’. Spier aims to minimise the impact of its activities on the environment. The estate is a Champion member of the Biodiversity & Wine Initiative (BWI), organically certified and follows the Integrated Production of Wine (IPW) criteria. In 2011, Condé Nast Traveler World Saver Award recognised the estate as the top international destination ‘Doing it All’. Spier’s environmental and social initiatives are many and varied, and include ways to reduce water usage: 100% of wastewater and over 80% of solid waste are recycled.
Wherever possible, the estate management looks for ways to support local industry and communities. The farm has been recognised by various external organisations including Fair Trade in Tourism (FTTSA) and the Wine Industry Ethical Trade Association (WIETA). The cellar has ISO 22000 certification and is Fair Trade accredited.
Spier supports local communities through the Treepreneur project, which encourages people in impoverished communities to grow trees in exchange for essential goods. The estate also supports entrepreneurs by helping them create micro-enterprises linked to Spier.
Accommodations are available at Spier as well as several other area hotels. Please see the Accommodations section of the website for more information.
