Several internationally renowned speakers have confirmed their participation. We are very pleased to announce that the following speakers will join us in Madrid:
Jennifer Corriero is co-founder and Executive Director of TakingITGlobal, a non-profit organization with the aim of fostering cross-cultural dialogue, strengthening the capacity of youth as leaders and increasing awareness and involvement in global issues through the use of technology. In 2005, Jennifer was named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum and in 2007, as one of Canada’s Top 100 Most Powerful Women by the Women’s Executive Network and as a York University Bryden Alumni Award winner.
In 2003, Jennifer was a member of the Official Canadian Government Delegation to the World Summit on the Information Society. She has presented and supported civil society engagement at events including the World Urban Forum, International AIDS Conference, World Summit on Sustainable Development, Youth Employment Summit and Global Knowledge Partnership International Forum.
Jennifer has a Masters in Environmental Studies from York University, and has been a youth engagement strategy consultant for a range of organizations including Microsoft, TD Bank, VanCity Credit Union, Ontario Science Centre and the Canadian Government.
John Fallon is Chief Executive of Pearson International Education and is responsible for the company’s education businesses outside North America, and a member of the Pearson management committee. He joined Pearson in 1997 as director of communications and was appointed President of Pearson Inc., a role he combined with his communications responsibilities, in 2000. In 2003, he was appointed CEO of Pearson’s educational publishing businesses for Europe, Middle East & Africa (EMA) and since then has gradually taken on a broader international education brief.
Prior to joining Pearson, John was director of corporate affairs at Powergen plc, where he was also a member of the company’s executive committee. Earlier in his career, John held senior public policy and communications roles at Westminster and in UK local government. He graduated from Hull University in 1983 with a degree in economics, politics and sociology. John is married with two children.
John Goddard is emeritus Professor of Regional Development Studies at Newcastle University (UK). He was previously Deputy Vice-Chancellor with responsibility for the University’s links with the city and region. Prior to that he founded and led the University’s Centre for Urban and Regional Development Studies (CURDS) from 1977 to 1998. Before moving to Newcastle, Goddard was a lecturer at the London School of Economics. He was awarded an OBE in 1986 and the Victoria Medal of the Royal Geographical Society in 1992, elected a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in 2004 and of University College London in 2010. Goddard was the academic leader of the first round of OECD reviews of Higher Education in Regional and City Development and was a member of the peer review team for the OECD review of Berlin (2010). He has also led reviews of regional engagement by Finnish Universities sponsored by the Finnish Higher Education Evaluation Council. Goddard has been awarded a Leverhulme Foundation Emeritus Fellowship and a Visiting Fellowship at the National Endowment for Science Technology and the Arts (NESTA). He is academic leader of an EU lifelong learning program to improve collaboration between universities, private sector companies and local governments.
In the fall of 2007, Margaret McKenna took the helm as President of the Walmart Foundation, the largest corporate cash contributor in America. Dr. McKenna came to her position with Walmart after 22 years as President of Lesley University, where she presided over its transformation from a small, regional college of 2,000 to a national university of 12,000. Prior to Lesley, Dr. McKenna served as Vice President at Radcliffe College, as Deputy Under Secretary in the U.S. Department of Education, and as White House Deputy Counsel to President Jimmy Carter. She began her career as a trial attorney with the Civil Rights Division of U.S. Department of Justice. Dr. McKenna is the recipient of several Honorary Degrees and many regional and national awards. The author of numerous articles, she is often invited to speak on issues of access, social justice and philanthropy. Dr. McKenna currently serves on a variety of corporate and non-profit boards and is the mother of two grown sons.
Reeta Roy is President and CEO of The MasterCard Foundation, an independent, private foundation based in Toronto, Canada with assets over $3 billion. The Foundation’s vision is to make the global economy work for everybody by advancing effective and innovative programs in the areas of microfinance and youth education.
Prior to joining the Foundation in 2008, Reeta was the Divisional Vice President of Global Citizenship and Policy at Abbott, a global health care company, and Vice President of the Abbott Fund, a corporate foundation. She created the citizenship and policy department and led Abbott’s public-private initiatives related to HIV/AIDS in Africa, global product donations program, and community initiatives. During her tenure, Abbott tripled its investment in global humanitarian programs and was named to the Dow Jones Sustainability Index. Previously, Reeta held a number of positions at Bristol-Myers Squibb Company from 1991 to 2002, working on global health issues and private-public partnerships, including a three-year assignment in Shanghai, China where she led public affairs and strategic planning for the business. Prior to joining the private sector, she worked at the United Nations.
Reeta grew up in Malaysia and received a Master of Arts in Law and Diplomacy from The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, and a Bachelor of Arts from St. Andrews Presbyterian College.
